It is official.  Fridays Roast Beef House has served it's last meals this evening.

One of Ottawa's landmark restaurants closes it's doors after 35 years.

Halifax, N.S. - On the eve of launching his new cookbook The Best of Chef at Home and beginning celebrations for Prince Edward Island’s Fall Flavours festival, Chef Michael Smith has discovered that a complete stranger has stolen his identity on Twitter.  The fraud was discovered earlier today when a writer for the Montreal Gazette questioned several negative tweets about the Montreal restaurant scene posted by the impostor.

I can now tell you that Michael Radford, featured Chef in the current issue of Food Mode, and Sous Chef at Restaurant 18, is now the Executive Chef of Savana Cafe.

Canvas

Robin

It's one of those places that I have been meaning to go to for some time.  Everything I have heard of this Wellington West restaurant was very positive.  It's just hard to hit every place you hear about.

This was one I should have tried harder to eat at sooner.  I would have found out earlier that Canvas is a gem.

Canvas is located about half way between Wellington and Scott Street.  The space is small, but bright and comfortable, the staff are charming and the menu isn't large, but has creative choices for everyone.  They also have a very impressive wine list with reasonable prices and plenty of great choices by the glass.

Terrorism Hits Home

Robin
I am very upset that two restaurateurs in the ByWard Market are taking foie gras off their menus. Not because they have found that no one wants to buy fattened duck liver, but because a handful of culinary terrorists have browbeaten them into surrender.
Following months of protests by a few activists, Domus Cafe Chef/Owner John Taylor and, as of this writing, Play Food & Wine owner Stephen Beckta, have agreed to strike foie gras off their list.
I understand their reasoning:A small band of noisy protestors with picket signs and loudspeakers outside their restaurant don't make for pleasant dining experiences for their guests. Their's was a business decision - one I regret, but can sympathize with nonetheless. Pretty ironic though that they picket Beckta's restuarant that doesn't serve foie gras because it's in a higher profile spot than his Nepean Street location. Guess that's also why they haven't bothered Perspective's Restaurant at Brookstreet in Kanata. I guess it's little far to get his four friends to Kanata.
The thing that burns my ass is this punk and his few friends have the audacity to pretend that they know what they are talking about. The head Taligras leader asked Food Mode's Editor if we could arrange to have a tour of a duck farm so he could see for himself what happens in one. He's never been to one himself - just seen videos from You Tube.
If you agree with these "opinion terrorists" as a brilliant young chef I know in Ottawa has called them, then I have a suggestion.
DON'T EAT FOIE GRAS!!!
But get your nose out of my dinner plate. I don't need your permission to do anything and I certainly am not going to change my mind about liking foie gras. If my Doctor and Chef Marc Lepine haven't convinced me - I don't think you're going to.  We all have our own conscience.
This guy likened me to a rapist. Since I want what I want then I am likely to rape a woman as well. After I stopped laughing at his stoopid remark and suggested that he change the batteries in his radar - I went into Beckta and ate some sweetbreads. Anybody got any issue with the thymus or pancreas gland of Bambi?
If these guys had a stand at the corner of a festival site, or asked to have some space in my magazine to tell their story while allowing adults to make their own decisions without fear of reprisal, I'd have no issue with what they are doing. Let's face it - we're not talking about eating babies here folks. Resorting to threatening and harassing telephone calls and aggressive actions outside of people's businesses is just going too far. They don't even let the abortion protesters out in front of Morgentaler's clinic on Bank Street act like these boobs.
And for those who will post and say that this is a one sided article like Ron Eade (www.roneade.com) got this evening - I say move along. Don't even bother making a negative comment, cause I won't even post it. I like John Taylor and I like Stephen Beckta and I LIKE FOIE GRAS!
It's not about you disagreeing with me. It's about actions taken. Period. These tactics are more reminiscent of the Taliban than the hallmark of a free and open society. Today it's foie gras, tomorrow?

WHAT A PARTY!!!!

Robin

I'll blog more on Savour The Tulips later, but I just wanted to send a message out to everyone who particiapted...

Thanks so much for helping us create such a beautiful event.

500+ people stormed the Mirror Tent at City Hall this afternoon to help Ottawa open the Canadian Tulip Festival.

I have recently signed up for a twitter account and am learning about tweeting and twittering and such.

I'm following all of the people I love and saw this video today...

I have to state right off the bat that I will not be able to do this story the justice it deserves.   I wasn't there, but it is still a great story and I will try to create the moment for you.

After Chef Matthew Carmichael read my last post on Makayla, the Oyster Monster - (if you haven't read it - back up and read it first), he told me I should tell the story of Makayla's prior birthday party.

Her lovely Aunt Nicole arranged to have a group of them attend Restaurant 18.  Matthew had just launched his Raw Bar nights, and she thought it would be a fitting place for a young girl of 6 who had just found her passion for oysters, to celebrate with some new food ideas.

I went to the NAC on Saturday night when I heard of Kurt Waldele's passing, to give Michael Blackie a little something to share with his team in Kurt's honour. When I got there, I was met by Peter. He said something to me that night that has resonated in my mind over the past few days. "You only had to meet Kurt twice to be his friend."

So many lives touched, so many tastes experienced, so many personal moments. The few people that I know who knew and loved him are devastated, yet proud.
